You are up to your knees in Bonefish, casting toward your beach, into the shallow flats. A soft Caribbean Breeze is at your back. If you look carefully, you see that all three “Grand Slam” species are present, not just Bonefish. Tarpon cruise and Permit hide out here too, drawn by the tide and the nearby channel that nurtures the baitfish. Also grouper, jack, kingfish and barracuda. . . This is sport-fishing heaven.
This 10.67-acre beachfront property is on the sunrise side of Pelican Caye, which is the eastern edge of Turneffe Atoll, just inside the protective reef. It is well situated right where the “flats” of the shallow reef meet the deep blue sea. The property has approximately 456 feet of oceanfront, and extends 1,220 ft back into the island. A navigable channel creates a slight break in the reef, so a boat can land here. I caught this barracuda on the flats near this 11-acre property, while I was “up to my knees” in bonefish.
The barracuda kept snatching the catch-and-release bonefish I was catching. So I rigged a half-bonefish on my hook, and caught the hungry barracuda with this #9 fly rig. The guides grilled it for dinner that night.
