The beach, the nearby Manatee Bar River, and the entire Southern Lagoon estuary system is classified as an IUCN Category IV Wildlife Sanctuary. This is an adventure and bird-watching paradise, surrounded by a natural abundance of wild flora and fauna. Scientists from around the world come here to study.
Just offshore begins the reef systems know as the MesoAmerican Barrier Reef. This is the second-largest barrier reef in the world. It is an adventure playground of sailing, boating, island hopping, snorkeling, and diving the most verdant coral reefs in the world. The only true coral atolls in the Western Hemisphere are within this reef system, stretching almost 200 miles along Belize’s coast, from Yucatan to Honduras. In fact, a dock built at this location would be the closest mainland demarcation point to Turneffe Atoll and the famous Lighthgouse Reef.
